inline? in-book? spoilers

A friend warmly recommended a book series to me and I just started it, and It Is Fine! However!! The author is fond of peppering ominous "Little did I know this would be the last time I spoke to X" or "If only I had known what would happen next" or "Maybe if I'd done this instead of that, it wouldn't all have gone so wrong" and while I can enjoy one, maybe two well-placed ones per book, at this level I'm finding it massively irritating. I don't even like "vibes" spoilers in general! Nothing pisses me off more than comments like "oooh you guys are gonna suffer" from people who read leaks or advance previews of whatever's popular, especially when I usually make it clear I don't want to know a thing before I start!

Right now it feels like I'm reading next to someone who goes "ooooh I wouldn't get too attached!!" whenever I think "oh I like this character", or "it's not going to go the way you think!!" when I simply thought to myself "hm interesting." Leave me alone!! 😂

Just took a pause after hitting one of those around page 200, about midway in the book. I know these people's plans keep failing! Something always goes wrong!! People die!! I don't need the warnings anymore!!!!!!! XD

The world is mean, the job contract was just a single week 💢💢
I finish this Saturday. They seem to be calling people and rotating them, so some of us are one week and others a month from what we exchanged.

Which I don't really get, they don't explain anything as we are so busy so wouldn't it be better to keep the people for a bit before kicking them out and getting new people who don't know wtf is going on...?

Either way, I think I just gained around €300, so it's not enough for a PS5...!
I think I will buy it anyways as Xmas present or something though, but I was excited to be able to buy more games and such 💢 I wish they didn't told me "Yeah, the season will last for 2 months" if they will only keep me for 6 days.

Anyway... The first day was terrible (I only made things worse for everyone) but now that they adapted the task to me & I finally know the general dynamic and what to do I'm much better off. It's pretty taxing in all senses, but it made me appreciate my mothers' cooking even more and I sleep like a baby.
I kind of like feeling sore as well... When I'm working I want to die, but I like the feeling after it haha. All the coworkers are angels too.

I wish they could've hired me for a month at least. But well, it was definitely a start on laboral life, hopefully it won't take me another year and half to find another one lol
(Everyone said I picked the worst/hardest job to start :p But there's lots of temporal vacancies on it and my two friends are on the same field, so I was curious)

I might be allergic to mango though... My arms are full of cuts and weals and I have been there for only 4 days lol

Images not loading on the reading page and some themes?

Is anyone else having issues around images not loading on Dreamwidth, lately? For a few days (couple weeks?) I've noticed that my reading page often only shows the alt-text for pics especially for images hosted on Dreamwidth, though not only that (for example there are AO3 news on my reading page at the moment, but the logos don't load unless I open the original page).

It's particularly visible on my [community profile] vriddywrites writing comm because none of the icons load, nor the header image. Does it all look fine for most of you? I rebooted my home router in case I had landed on a banned IP or something, but no dice. The background image on my journal here also loads just fine in general... Icons also have no problems. Huh... 🤔

Little Black Dress Exchange reveals

The [community profile] littleblackdressex exchange creator reveals happened this morning :D I wrote a Hawks/Natsuo quiet nature walk fic (and added a notch and 28th ship to my Hawks shipping challenge XD). Funnily enough, I ended up matching to the person I wrote all the pinch hits for earlier in the year. Hopefully they aren't sick of me yet 😂

Unknowable | Boku no Hero Academia | Natsuo/Hawks | 1.3k words | rated G
Summary: After the war, Hawks and Natsuo start meeting regularly. It all started with Natsuo desperate to understand more about how his lost brother became the broken man in the hospital.
Read it on Dreamwidth or AO3

Delightfully, my gift was also Hawks/Natsuo! What are the odds?? Little Black Dress is like a personal "bowl" exchange, and Hawks/Natsuo is not a particularly popular ship... I'm not actually sure they even ever share a panel in the manga? XD

My gifter went at the ship from a different angle and I loooove the story premise they wrote to go with it, it is perfect and their art is LOVELY, they picked a perfect scene :D

I wanna date my role model's son! | Boku no Hero Academia | Natsuo/Hawks | Art | Not rated/SFW

Well. How time gets away from you!

I've got no excuse for not updating for this long except that I didn't feel like it lmao. Nothing super exciting has really been going on and I've been using most of my free time to do other things. (The renovation at work creeps ever closer to being done, and I did have fun at the anime convention I went to last month, though I was too lazy to do a write up of all the merch I got like I normally would. I did get multiple compliments on the Faye Valentine shirt that I wore haha.) I want to try to update more and get back to checking my reading list though!! I hope everyone's been doing well since I last checked in.

A few things I've been reading/watching/etc. lately...

➤ I started playing Metaphor: ReFantazio a while ago! It's slow going as I am a slow gamer but I'm currently at the 4th (?) dungeon, the one on the mustari island. I'm enjoying it so far! + )

➤ I started reading the Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint Webtoon because I saw the print volumes in the library system so I was like, sure I'll see what all the fuss is about. I only read volumes 1-6 (though I think volume 7 is out in English already?) but I'm enjoying it! + )

➤ I forget if I mentioned this before but Scott Westerfeld's Leviathan YA book series got an anime adaptation that aired on Netflix recently, which is the wildest thing that's ever happened. I LOVED the Leviathan books when I read them so of course I had to watch the anime immediately. + )

➤ Did I ever talk about the absolute disappointment that was The Old Guard 2? + )

➤ Yes, I watched Kpop Demon Hunters. Yes, I loved Kpop Demon Hunters. Yes, I've listened to the album a hundred times. It's a pretty standard plot, but the animation is gorgeousss, Sony Animation knocked it out of the park again, the characters are fun, the music slaps, and it's just an all-around good time. The only unrealistic part about it is a boy group putting out consistent bangers sjdhfkjsdfs but I guess having demonic powers helps.

Has anyone being using Focus Friend by Hank Green lmao? It's a productivity timer app for your phone, you set a time limit to not look at your phone and your little bean avatar knits socks while it's running. Then you use the socks to buy items to decorate your bean guy's room. Everyone at work started using it so I was like okay fine I'll try it lol. Haven't gotten enough socks yet to buy any decorations but it did keep me from playing on my phone while I should've been working a couple times so I guess that's good!

After a year and half of search, I'm starting my first job this monday.
It's very bad (physical labor, €5.50/hour, 12-14h daily) but it's just for two months, so I will try to endure it o(* ̄▽ ̄*)ブ
I won't have a life until November, but thanks to it I will finally be able to buy a PS5 and play/buysome games I have been wanting for years, so I'm gonna have a very cool end of 2025 hehe. I'm excited about them~

Then... It scares me, but I think I'm gonna try to get my driver license. I'm partially blind though, so I have to get checked before in case I'm a danger to everyone...
And I hope with it I will be able to get a better and longer job.
The situation in Spain is very bad.... Everyone has to leave the country because the few jobs avaible are like the one I'm at, and they don't let you live nor give enough money to survive. But I will try to remain positive, at least I'm very glad my family is supportive.

So yeah, I won't be active at all for these 2 months. I joined the ZA countdown project, I hope I can finish my drawing....

Reading Roundup, August 2025

My Father and Myself - J. R. Ackerley

Joe Ackerley was a literary editor and memoirist from the early 20th century. He lived as openly gay when homosexuality was still illegal in Britain. And though he never had a steady long-term partner, he seems to have had many friendships and to have mentored young gay writers during his tenure working for the BBC. Mostly, this memoir is not about these parts of his life—mostly, this is the story of Ackerley coming to understand his sexuality, alongside a recollection of his relationship with his father, whose own past he only belatedly takes an interest in learning.

Ackerley’s memoir is short and easy to read, despite his foreword warning about irregularities in the timeline. He writes in flowing first person with long, punctuation-heavy sentences. But the book is short and fairly narrow, so it’s not a challenge to follow the personalities and events. As a memoir, I don’t want to review it for “plot,” but Ackerley is clearly invested in the construction of his “reveals.” I wasn’t really surprised by any of them (or truly convinced that most were reveals) but anyone who wishes to go in unspoiled should take care to read the introduction, by W. H. Auden, last. Make sure also to read the Appendix before that, which is not optional content.

Chrestomanci Book One: Charmed Life - Diana Wynne Jones

The first book (publication order) in the Chrestomancy series tells the story of a young boy, Eric “Cat” Chant, as he experiences your fairly typical magical adventures: dead parents, a startling new world, tangles with other children, a mysterious and aloof magical mentor, and a final life-threatening confrontation over a magical macguffin. There is even a (baby) dragon and a castle, and being a children’s novel, it fits neatly into an afternoon’s read.

I can’t go back in time and read this as a child to compare, but I suspect that I would always have been upset by such a passive main character. It is one of my more recurrent complaints as a reader. There are seven of these books, and I cannot stomach any others about Cat, even if he matures, as this one spoiled him for me. I am vaguely interested in Christopher, and I know that two books focus on him, so I may read one or both of those standalone. This book had a really jarring moment of anti-Asian racism in it, but it is the oldest of the series, and a quick scan of reviews of the more recent entries doesn’t send up red flags for that recurring. The universe of the series is interesting and I do understand the appeal of this magic system—it seems like a compelling universe for worldbuilding, which is probably a main source of its enduring appeal.

Shyness and Dignity - Dag Solstad, tr. Sverre Lyngstad

Elias Rukla is a middle-aged literature instructor at a high school in Oslo. After a disappointing class period, he has an angry breakdown out front of the school. What follows is an accounting of his life, from his university education through his early career, marriage, and step-parenthood. Thus emerges the story of his listlessness and dissatisfaction in a job which never fulfills him and in a relationship with no emotional intimacy.

This was a recommendation from a friend with more esoteric tastes in prose than my own. I ultimately prefer a recognizable narrative style and did not appreciate what this novel was doing. There are some funny observations, like this excerpt about Thomas Mann’s The Magic Mountain:

One of his colleagues came into the teachers’ lounge just before the bell rang for the first class and said, I’m somewhat of a Hans Castorp today, I should probably have stayed under the eiderdown. A jolt shot through Elias Rukla. Had he heard correctly? Was the name of Hans Castorp mentioned, and in this free and easy way, in passing? Hans Castorp, the main character in Thomas Mann’s novel The Magic Mountain, referred to by a senior master at Fagerborg High School, and not by a German teacher, but actually by someone who taught mathematics!

(And what a fun reminder of Spender’s The Temple!)

But these are few, and even they are drawn out to pages of repetition, so that the original humor is lost. I can’t think of any audience that I would recommend this to; I trust that if it is your interest, you’ll run across it from a more suitable source.

The Remains of the Day - Kazuo Ishiguro

This is the second Ishiguro of my summer, and I am sorry to conclude that I don’t think I get along with him. This is an extremely well-told story of an English butler reflecting on his 30-year career in a distinguished house, Darlington Hall, from the vantage point of a short motoring vacation to see an old friend. Narrated in a Very Correct first person, the book does a great job of establishing the voice of the butler, Mr. Stevens. Ishiguro clearly understands the importance of perspective with unreliable narrators, something I remember from Never Let Me Go. Unfortunately, he so effectively set up the reasons to question Mr. Stevens that I could not bring myself to feel the sympathetic turn when that arrived.

I can’t recommend either for or against this book—it’s a very carefully put together story, but by an author who doesn’t quite work for me.

Ah, Fandom, you know what you like :D

That feeling when you've been vaguely adjacent to a fandom for years and only know enough to be aware of what the overwhelmingly popular ship is, only to finally start the series and realise that the love interest dies in the first quarter of the series XD

At the same time, it's a slash enemies-to-lovers style of ship with the enemy pretty much dying in the main character's arms or close enough, with the lightest dash of protectiveness and plenty of competency to go around, so, yeah. I can see the fandom catnip haha. I was just mentally readying myself for more blink-and-you'll-miss-it fun interactions in the future, but I guess not! 😂
