The first time Wes saw Rui was when he was pulling her out of a bag and fighting her captors. As she looked at him with an we that had never been reserved for someone like him, he wondered what he could possibly be thinking.

Umbreon and Espeon easily beat out the people who'd tried to kidnap her, and when they'd fled, he released a breath he hadn't been aware he was holding. 

She was so grateful Wes didn't know how the hell to deal with it. To be honest, the girl's open affection made his skin itch — he had never been good at being praised. Nobody ever really bothered to try. It was much easier to be rude than to be kind. 

Rui didn't seem put off, though. She ended up having to come with him anyway, as she could see the mutated Pokemon Cipher had cruelly created. It was a testament, he thought, to the kind of open-hearted person she was.

As she followed him to the town's Pokemon Center, he grew increasingly more antsy. She was all bright smiles and kind words, and Wes had no idea how to respond.

Just what had he gotten himself into?
